We have been to Athens previously and spent a good few days there before the cruise, so this time, since our cruise embarked from Piraeus, we chose a hotel that was conveniently located close to the cruise port, as we were arriving only a day before departure. After some research, we settled on the Mitsis N U Piraeus Port — and it turned out to be a great call for an easy, low-stress embarkation day.

The Location

This was the deciding factor for us. The hotel sits a stone throw from the train station and only a 10-minute drive to the cruise port itself. If you’re flying into Athens and heading straight to a cruise the next day, this kind of proximity takes so much stress out of the equation. Bear in mind though that there can be cruise passenger traffic (incoming and outgoing) so this will also affect travel time. In our case, we left the hotel at 9:45 AM and instead of a 10 minute taxi ride, we had a 20 minute one. We reckon around 11-12 noon would be the peak of this traffic.

The Hotel

Mitsis N U Piraeus Port is a 4-star boutique hotel with 103 rooms, an on-site restaurant, and the standout feature — the 801 Rooftop Bar, which looks straight out over the sea. It’s a lovely spot to grab a drink and watch the sun go down before a big travel day.

The Room

We booked their luxury room, and it didn’t disappoint. It felt modern and well put together, with plenty of charging sockets scattered around — genuinely useful if you’re travelling with a few devices to keep topped up overnight. The bed was comfortable enough for a solid night’s sleep, and the little touches were there too: toiletries, tea and coffee, all provided.

At £98 a night (around $131), breakfast and wifi were both included, which felt like good value for a boutique hotel this close to the port.

The Staff

The staff were lovely throughout our stay — helpful and attentive from check-in to check-out.

The Downsides

If there’s one thing to flag, it’s the air-conditioning. It could have been stronger, especially given we were travelling at the peak of the Mediterranean summer. It is worth knowing if you’re visiting in July or August.

Also, as this is a boutique hotel, there are only 2 lifts/elevators available for use and at peak times, it often gets busy and you would have to wait longer for your turn.

The Verdict

For a one-night pre-cruise stopover, Mitsis N U Piraeus Port ticked all the right boxes: unbeatable location, comfortable modern room, genuinely warm staff, and a rooftop bar worth lingering at. The AC aside, we’d happily stay again before our next Piraeus departure.

Would we recommend it? Yes — especially if convenience to the cruise port is top of your list.
