Casa Amatller stands on Passeig de Gràcia in the Eixample district of Barcelona. The building was designed by the Catalan architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch and is a prominent example of Catalan Modernisme, the architectural movement that flourished in the city around the turn of the twentieth century.
The facade combines Catalan Gothic detailing with a stepped gable that draws comparisons to Flemish civic architecture. Decorative animal sculptures feature among the ornamental elements across the exterior, giving the building a distinctly inventive character that sets it apart from its neighbours on the block.
The property takes its name from Antoni Amatller, the chocolate manufacturer who commissioned it. It sits alongside Casa Batllo and Casa Lleó Morera on a stretch of Passeig de Gràcia that is commonly referred to as the Block of Discord, on account of the contrasting architectural styles grouped closely together.
