If you’re not planning on visiting any of the Orlando theme parks (Disney World, Universal, etc.), we’d recommend one of two hotel strategies:
- Stay near the airport and travel to Port Canaveral the following morning. Hotels around MCO are plentiful and affordable, and you’ll have easy access to all of the shuttle services we cover below.
- Stay near Port Canaveral in the Cape Canaveral or Cocoa Beach area. This way, you’re already right by the port and just need a short ride to the terminal on cruise day. Hotels like the Country Inn & Suites, Homewood Suites, and the Radisson Resort at the Port are all popular with cruisers and most offer their own shuttle service to the cruise terminals for a small fee.
Either way, you’ll sleep soundly knowing that nothing is going to come between you and your ship.
Option 1: Go Port Shuttle (Our Recommendation)

Option 2: Uber / Lyft
Rideshare is the option most people instinctively reach for, and it does have some advantages — mainly flexibility and door-to-door service.

Important: These are per-car prices, not per-person. So for a group of 3-4, it can work out comparable to shuttle pricing on a per-person basis. For a couple though, you’re looking at significantly more than two Go Port shuttle tickets.
The big variable is surge pricing. On embarkation days when thousands of cruisers are all requesting rides to Port Canaveral at the same time, fares can spike well above the estimates above. We’ve seen reports of fares hitting $150+ for a standard UberX on busy Saturday mornings.
Travel Time

- Weekends / Embarkation Days: 50-70 minutes (traffic around the port can be heavy)
Uber and Lyft may have a slight edge on travel time since it’s a direct route with no other passengers to wait for. But the difference is marginal.
Things to Consider
- Luggage space: An UberX will realistically only fit two cruisers and their luggage comfortably. If you’ve got a family of four with suitcases, you’ll need an XL vehicle, which pushes the price up.
- Driver cancellations: This does happen, especially for longer rides. If a driver cancels, you’re back to waiting and re-requesting at what might now be a higher surge price.
- No pre-booking guarantee: You can reserve in advance, but availability and pricing on the day are never guaranteed.
- Return trip surge: Coming back from Port Canaveral to MCO on debarkation day can be even worse for surge pricing, as every passenger from every ship is looking for a ride at the same time.
When It Makes Sense
