St Thomas
The busiest of the US Virgin Islands, with a duty-free harbour town at Charlotte Amalie and the national park beaches of St John a short ferry ride away.
About
St Thomas is one of the three main US Virgin Islands, which Denmark sold to the United States in 1917. Its capital, Charlotte Amalie, climbs the hills around a deep natural harbour, and the old Danish warehouses along its waterfront are now shops, many of them selling duty-free jewellery and watches to cruise passengers.
Ships dock at Havensight, east of the town, or at Crown Bay to the west. Both are a short taxi ride from the centre, and from the island it is an easy ferry crossing to St John, more than half of which is protected as Virgin Islands National Park.
This was the shortest port call of our cruise, with all aboard at half past two. We spent it on St John, on Royal Caribbean's Trunk Bay Beach Escape: a ferry across, an open-air safari bus over the hills and a couple of hours swimming and snorkelling at Trunk Bay.
