Sint Maarten

St Maarten

The Dutch half of St Martin, a small island shared with France, where cruise ships dock at Philipsburg and jets land just over the sand at Maho Beach.

About

St Martin is a small island in the north-east Caribbean, divided between two countries since 1648: the French Collectivity of Saint-Martin to the north, and Sint Maarten, a country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands, to the south. There is no border control between them, and you can cross from one side to the other without noticing.

Cruise ships dock on the Dutch side at Philipsburg, the capital, where a boardwalk runs along Great Bay beach past bars, shops and duty-free jewellers. West of the town, Simpson Bay Lagoon fills much of the island, its marinas lined with superyachts, and at its edge Princess Juliana International Airport brings jets in low over Maho Beach.

Our port day here was Royal Caribbean's Rhino Rider excursion: a two-person mini speedboat across the lagoon, the planes at Maho seen from the water, and a swim and a rest at Kim Sha Beach before heading back to the ship.
