About this place

Republic Street, Triq ir-Repubblika in Maltese, is the spine of Valletta. It runs for about a kilometre in a straight line from City Gate towards Fort St Elmo at the tip of the peninsula, and most of it is pedestrianised, so you can wander with your head up, looking at the balconies.

The top end is the busiest, with shops and cafés. Further along you pass the Grandmaster's Palace on St George's Square, Republic Square with the National Library and its statue of Queen Victoria, and the National Museum of Archaeology in the Auberge de Provence. St John's Co-Cathedral is a short detour away.

Walk the full length, then lose yourself in the side streets. They drop steeply towards the harbours on either side, are noticeably quieter, and are lined with the enclosed wooden balconies Valletta is known for.

Our take
Not a sight in itself, but the easiest way to take in Valletta. Walk it end to end, then duck into the side streets.
