Athens remains a city where history sits right in the middle of everyday life, and this open air forum is a perfect example. Built between 19 and 11 B.C., it served as the commercial heart of the city under Roman rule, marked by its distinctive columns and octagonal tower.
Walking through the site feels grounded and unhurried because parts of the area remain unexcavated to this day. We enjoyed seeing the heavy marble foundations and standing pillars up close. This gives a clear sense of the scale and texture of the original ancient market stalls and walkways.
Visitors need to pay an entry fee, though much of the site is visible from the surrounding public streets in the Plaka district. It is a manageable stop that fits easily into a morning walk between the Acropolis and the modern shops, taking roughly forty five minutes to explore.
